1876. [GILMAN, CHARLOTTE, PERKINS STETSON]. 18 ADVERTISING TRADE CARDS Designed by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Providence, RI: Boston, MA: Kendal Mfg. Co.; Curtis, Savis & Co. [ca. 1876-1882]. 18 Trade cards designed by Charlotte Perkins Gilman as a young student. Trade card: 2 7/8" x 4 1/4", printed in color against a gold background on buff stock. Some cards print advertisements on the verso. Some show light surface wear. Generally very good. 13 of the cards advertise Kendall Mfg. (French Laundry and Soapine); and 3 advertise Curtis Davis & Co.'s Welcome Soap. 2 cards depicting young women as floweres were designed to be used by printers and businesses as they chose. Set of Three Soapine Trade Cards
Providence, RI, Kendall Mugacturing Co. 1882. Four trade cards, n. d. (early 1880s); 3 x 4 1/4; chromolithographed illustrations on a gold background, with minor wear; text in black to verso; all three with some glue residue to verso from previously being in a scrapbook; one of the cards with clipped lower right corner; overall in good to very good condition. Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860 - 1935) - author, feminist, social reformer, artist, and great-niece of Harriet Beecher Stowe - began her career as a Soapine artist in 1880, when her cousin Robert Brown, a bookkeeper at the Kendall Manufacturing Company asked her to create advertising designs for the soap cards. The current set included: "A Train Approaching a Daydreaming Man, Standing in the Middle of the Trackes," "A Sailor on the Top of a Ship's Mast, Waving a Soapine Flag," and "A Lady under a Clothesline, with the Hanging Clothes Spelling Soapine."
